67 - San Giovanni delle Formiche

Raggiunto l’abitato di Gandosso si prosegue sino alla località “Il Pitone”, qui cerchiamo un posto dove parcheggiare, che è abbastanza facile da trovare in settimana, ma il sabato e la domenica, ci si dovrà accontentare di trovarlo presso la chiesetta che abbiamo superato, durante il viaggio di avvicinamento. Percorsi a piedi gli ultimi metri, raggiungiamo la nostra meta. Sulla destra troveremo il “Parco Avventura del Pitone”, sulla sinistra la Casa degli Alpini di Gandosso. Iniziamo il percorso passando nella zona picnic e giochi del Parco Avventura, ci inoltriamo su di un sentiero sterrato che risulta sufficientemente impegnativo, per la presenza di massi che rendono poco agevole la salita. Al termine di questo tratto di sentiero, superiamo alla nostra sinistra un roccolo, che ci sovrasta con la sua mole, qui il sentiero diventa pianeggiante ed agevole. Raggiunto il bivio, proseguiamo diritti ed entriamo subito dopo nel bosco. Proseguendo sul versante ovest della collina intravediamo la pianura di Zandobbio. Il tratto nel bosco su questo versante è sistemato sufficientemente, ma bisogna fare attenzione ai restringimenti, in alcuni tratti dello stesso ed alla poca protezione verso valle. Uscendo dal bosco raggiungiamo un roccolo. Il sentiero diventa agevole e ci spostiamo sul versante est della collina. Il sentiero passa a fianco di una serie di roccoli ben tenuti. Il fondo del sentiero ora è in acciottolato. Superiamo sulla sinistra un altro roccolo. Uno più bello dell’altro. In alcuni tratti il sentiero diventa impegnativo, con continui saliscendi e fondo di acciottolato. Raggiunto l’ennesimo roccolo e intravediamo in lontananza San Giovanni delle formiche. Sul versante est del sentiero compare il lago di Iseo. Il sentiero riprende a salire e incontriamo l’ultimo roccolo. Raggiunto il bivio, incontriamo la prima Santella del percorso sulla sinistra, intravediamo a destra della stessa un sentiero che scende nel bosco. Noi proseguiremo seguendo il sentiero che è nel frattempo diventato una pista agro silvo pastorale con una forte pendenza. Bisogna fare attenzione al passaggio di auto utilizzate per il raggiungimento dei roccoli per la loro manutenzione. Il tratto ora risulta impegnativo per la forte pendenza e per il fondo stradale a volte sconnesso, per una lunghezza di circa 300 m. Al termine della salita raggiungiamo San Giovanni delle formiche. Superiamo sulla sinistra la struttura, ora trasformata in un ristorante. Dopo una breve sosta iniziamo a percorrere la strada asfaltata in discesa, in direzione del bivio che ci porterebbe a destra a Villongo e a sinistra a Zandobbio. Un cartello ci informa che abbiamo raggiunto la fine del PLIS. Dopo un tratto a esse, proseguendo nella discesa, si raggiunge una Santella, dove troviamo sulla sinistra della strada, l’inizio del sentiero nel bosco, che ci porterà sulla strada del ritorno. Sul lato destro della strada, dietro la Santella, troviamo un cartello che ci informa della presenza di una Cascina. Entriamo nel bosco e ci incamminiamo sul sentiero, che risulta agevole e ben tenuto. All’uscita dal bosco ritroviamo la prima Santella del nostro percorso e girando a destra ci incamminiamo sulla via del ritorno. Nel tratto finale nel bosco, il sentiero si presenta come un “sali e scendi” continuo, con poca protezione verso valle (lato destro del sentiero), prestiamo attenzione e lo superiamo agevolmente, anche se leggermente impegnativo. Arrivati alla località “Il Pitone”, decidiamo di percorrere il sentiero di sinistra. Raggiungiamo quindi il punto dal quale siamo partiti all’inizio dell’escursione.

Having reached the built-up area of Gandosso we continue to the locality of "Il Pitone", here we look for a place to park, which is easy enough to find during the week, but on Saturdays and Sundays, we will have to be content to find it at the little church that we passed during the approach journey. After walking the last few metres, we reach our destination. On the right we find the "Parco Avventura del Pitone" (Python Adventure Park), on the left the Casa degli Alpini di Gandosso (Gandosso Alpine Association). We begin the route by passing through the picnic and games area of the Adventure Park, and then we enter a dirt track that is sufficiently challenging, due to the presence of boulders that make the ascent difficult. At the end of this part of the path, we pass a rock formation on our left, which towers above us with its bulk; here the path becomes flat and easy. When we reach the fork, we continue straight ahead and immediately enter the forest. Continuing on the western side of the hill, we catch a glimpse of the Zandobbio plain. The section in the forest on this slope is sufficiently arranged, but we must be careful of the narrowing in some parts of the forest and the lack of protection towards the valley. As we leave the forest, we reach a rockery. The path becomes easy and we move onto the eastern side of the hill. The path passes by a series of well-maintained rockeries. The bottom of the path is now cobbled. We pass another roccolo on the left. One is more beautiful than the other. In some places the path becomes demanding, with continuous ups and downs and a cobbled surface. We reach yet another roccolo and glimpse San Giovanni delle formiche in the distance. Lake Iseo appears on the eastern side of the path. The path begins to climb again and we meet the last roccolo. Reaching the junction, we meet the first Santella of the route on the left, and we glimpse a path to the right of it that descends into the forest. We continue following the path, which has in the meantime become an agro-sylvo-pastoral track with a steep incline. Attention must be paid to the passage of cars used to reach the roccoli for their maintenance. The stretch is now challenging due to the steep slope and the sometimes uneven road surface, for a length of about 300 metres. At the end of the climb, we reach San Giovanni delle formiche. We pass the structure on the left, now converted into a restaurant. After a brief stop, we begin to follow the tarmac road downhill, in the direction of the crossroads that would take us right to Villongo and left to Zandobbio. A sign informs us that we have reached the end of the PLIS. After a stretch of them, continuing downhill, we reach a Santella, where, on the left of the road, we find the beginning of the path through the woods, which will take us on the way back.
On the right side of the road, behind the Santella, we find a sign informing us of the presence of a Cascina. We enter the forest and walk along the path, which is smooth and well maintained. As we leave the forest, we find the first Santella on our route and turn right on our way back. In the final stretch through the forest, the path is a continuous up and down, with little protection towards the valley (right-hand side of the path); we pay attention and overcome this with ease, although it is slightly challenging. When we reach 'Il Pitone', we decide to take the path to the left. We then reach the point from which we started the hike.
